|I have tasted many strange foods in my near 30 years on the road. Live termites was top of my list of foods until recently. Among the things I have been given to drink are 30-day old fermented milk and the sap of a beech tree (probably the most powerful laxative in the world!).
I must be honest, when my host on a recent trip to Cameroon came with a new dish and a smile on her face I did not have a similar smile on my face. I was not prepared to be told that this was one of her favourite dishes - snail stew.
There must have been about 40 of the things, some small and squishy and others quite large and surprisingly leathery. "Well," I said, "If you can eat them, so can I!" I guess we tend to eat with our eyes and not our taste buds. The first mouthful was quite difficult, but I did manage to get through the dish with no ill-effects!
I guess you could call it an occupational hazard!
